Teaching Philosophy
My personal experiences and triumphs have lead me to this moment, I am a teacher! As a teacher, I will integrate four elements into my discipline. “Actions speak louder than words,” Spongebob Squarepants, equal educational opportunities, and fun are the elements of my teaching philosophy. These elements will assist my path to become a well-rounded teacher.
“Actions speak louder than words” is an expression relating to the transformative model of critical pedagogy. My sole purpose as a teacher is to maintain an active learning environment. Joan Wink believes that “learning is about ownership.” This statement is completely true. From my own learning experiences, I associate with the disciplines that I had an active role in learning them. Transformative teachers are the most memorable. These teachers gave students the opportunity to research, write, and perform a play relating to Galileo in the fourth grade. These teachers encourage their students to inform their families about the need for home recycling after an action-packed lesson on the environment.
Most of my professional experience has been teaching a variety of art disciplines. Art Education is only a starting point for my determination to enhance other disciplines with creativity. “Children who participate in the arts are more likely to participate in a math and science fair” (Crayola.com). This is just the start of self-esteem building academic programs that are influenced by creativity. Math, science, social studies, and language arts will come alive to students with the assistance of visual art, theater, and dance.
Spongebob Squarepants is a cartoon that currently taking the nation by storm. Everybody knows and loves Spongebob. Not only is Spongebob a cartoon, but also a philosophy. Children relate to the unknown with known. If I relate to my students, they will better relate to me. Associations assist in the learning process. Writing about my summer vacation and creating a Spongebob out of clay are two examples of how a child can learn by relating. As a teacher, I need to keep an accurate awareness of the happening of Pop Culture.
My philosophy is also about being an equal opportunity educator. As a teacher, it is my duty to maintain a desegregated learning environment. Society is what teaches prejudices, but it is the classroom that will break them. As the leader of the classroom environment, I will set the example of how to treat everyone equally. Favoritism will be exiled from both my mind and vocabulary. Some of my most valuable teaching experiences have taken place in democratic and diverse learning environments.
The final and most important element of my teaching philosophy is “fun.” “Learning can be fun,” is a slogan for many games and toys on the market today. The Webster’s Dictionary defines fun to be, “a source of enjoyment, amusement, or pleasure.” If we have to work, should work be something we enjoy? If students have to be in school to learn, should there everyday lesson be enjoyable? Fun creates an environment that people will want to come back to. Fun discourages stress and creates a desirable environment. Is it possible to maintain a classroom environment based around fun? Yes, fun with set boundaries will create all learning and amusing classroom.
Teaching is my passion. My teaching philosophy is how I plan to obtain that passion. As I continue to learn and unlearn my teaching philosophy, I promise to make the changes and keep on living critical pedagogy. Critical pedagogy is essentially the philosophy for the teaching profession. Always remember action, relate, desegregate, and just have fun learning!
